We take pride in our ability to offer excellence in the virtual learning experience. Virtual Learning Academy teachers and staff partner with parents to give students the support they need to succeed, adapt to challenges, and embrace their full potential in a virtual learning school. Our goal is to support students' learning and help students feel comfortable and confident as they navigate the virtual experience. About Our School

      • Pickerington Schools is proud to offer the Virtual Learning Academy (VLA) to our families!

For the 2022-23 school year, Pickerington Schools will offer the Virtual Learning Academy for first through twelfth grades.

Younger students will need a parent or other adult for daily facilitation. This adult is responsible for supporting and helping the student complete online activities and assessments. We encourage a daily routine to support student learning. Classes are structured to help establish routines, but creating a schedule at home will help optimize a student’s success. If you need support to help your child, the VLA has an administrator to lead the virtual school. A partnership between the school and family is important.

As students move into middle school and junior high, they may need some support transitioning to a learning environment that allows for more flexibility than a structured elementary schedule. Adult support may include monitoring the completion of learning activities, monitoring comprehension of content, and turning in assignments.

High school students can expect to work more independently and/or self-paced.

For students in grades one through five, Pickerington Virtual Learning Academy (VLA) uses Edmentum's Calvert Learning, an elementary project-based curriculum for online core and specials courses (primary school electives). Calvert Learning courses are aligned to  Ohio's Learning Standards  and will be somewhat self-paced. Students will have two specials classes. First grade will study physical education and health, and second through fifth grades will study physical education and art.

Calvert Learning/Edmentum teachers teach each class. No Pickerington Schools-employed teacher teaches these courses. Pickerington VLA teachers do support students' online learning, and each VLA student has a Pickerington Schools teacher as the teacher of record. Each teacher of record holds regular office hours to support students and parents.

Calvert/Learning/Edmentum teachers have live Zoom class meetings Monday through Thursday. These teachers schedule bi-weekly meetings with parents to keep parents updated on their student’s progress. Please be sure your student attends class and that you make every effort to attend your meetings with the teacher.
