Grade level fees are collected for student workbooks and consumables. For your convenience, fee payments may be made at Back to School Nights. You may make your payment by credit card, cash or check (please make payable to PLSD).

Attendance Policies & Absence Reporting

Please remember to call the school if your child is absent. State Law requires a daily check of students who are absent. A 24-hour answering machine is available to receive absence or tardy calls. Please use this machine for all calls after 4:00pm and before 8 a.m. The number is 614.834.6301.

  • When a student reaches approximately 10 days of absence, without medical documentation, an absence notification letter will be sent home.
  • A student who reaches approximately 15 days of absence, without medical documentation, will be placed on Needs Medical Excuse status. Additional days of absence will result in a meeting with the Attendance officer.
  • Any student who provides medical documentation will be exempt from any action of related absences.
Approved Reasons for School Absences

All absences from school must be confirmed by a parent/guardian. Pickerington Local School District recognizes the following reasons as excused absences:

  1. Personal Illness
  2. Quarantine of home
  3. Death of a relative
  4. Observance of religious holiday
  5. Illness in the family
  6. Emergency
  7. Set of circumstances justified by the superintendent

Any other absence is subject to be considered an unexcused absence. Pre-planned absences are subject to approval by the principal and are considered chargeable absences.

Late Arrivals (Tardies)

Parents must sign in at the main office if their child arrives after 9:15 am.

The Pickerington Local School District recognizes the following reasons for late arrivals (tardies):

  1. Doctor/Dentist Appointment
  2. Court Related Matter
  3. Emergency
Arrival and Dismissal Procedures

Bus riders will be loading and unloading in the back of the building. No cars should be parked in this area during the school day. Parents dropping off students in the morning may do so in the front of the building at the second set of double doors (by cafeteria). As you exit the school parking lot, please obey all stop signs. Please park in the front parking lot in designated parking spaces. Side parking is for staff only.

Parents picking up students after school may pick students up at 3:55 p.m. in front of the school at the second set of double doors (by cafeteria). Staff will help load students in your car as you pull up in line. Children going to day care centers will exit and be picked up at the side of the building.

The traffic flow runs fairly smoothly, however, inclement weather conditions will certainly impact dismissal time. We ask for your patience and cooperation in helping us dismiss your student directly to you in a safe and timely manner. During inclement weather, students will wait inside in the cafeteria, right inside the second set of double doors. Staff will assist students to your car as you pull up in line.

If there is a change in the student’s normal arrival and dismissal routine, please write a note to notify the school; otherwise normal procedure will be followed. Please do not call the school for dismissal changes after 2:30 p.m. unless an emergency.

Please remember students are not permitted to go to their classrooms until 9:05 a.m. Please do not drop off students early because supervision is not available before 8:55 a.m. Students must be in their classrooms by the tardy bell at 9:15 a.m. Please drop them off in plenty of time to walk to their classroom. We appreciate all your help and cooperation in helping us keep your child safe while at school.

All Kindergarten AM pick up will be at the first set of doors (by office).

Behavioral Expectations

The emphasis at Toll Gate Elementary is on safety and learning. Each staff member works toward providing the safest and best educational environment for your child. Good discipline promotes an appropriate learning environment. We ask that each parent support this expectation of student behavior by encouraging their child to obey school rules. A list of rules is printed in the student handbook (please review these with your child). Behavior that interferes with the educational process cannot be tolerated. Your support will help promote the educational process. A copy of the district disciplinary policy is in the school office for parental review upon request.

News from the Clinic

Please complete and sign the emergency medical form, then return it to school as soon as possible.

If information changes, especially phone numbers please let us know as soon as possible. Clinic staff members often check the emergency medical forms first when contacting parents, so it is important that everything is up-to-date.

The clinic is always looking for gently used clothing for when children have accidents of one sort or another and a parent is unable to bring clean clothes.  We especially could use bottoms—shorts, athletic pants, or sweats.

Safety Drills

Safety drills will be conducted periodically throughout the year. Fire drills will be practiced every other month, while tornado drills, lock-down and active shooter procedures will be practiced during the school year. Each classroom is provided with a crisis management plan. These plans are reviewed with staff and with substitute teachers.

Proper School Attire

The students continue to go outside for recess during the winter months when weather permits. Indoor recess will be held only on those days of inclement weather or when the wind chill factor is below 25 degrees. Students should always come to school prepared for outside recess. This includes coats, hats, gloves, etc.

Recycling

Remember to bring all paper products to our parking area for recycling. (No Cardboard) Not only does this help our environment, but also generates money for our school.

Change of Address / Updating Student Information

All requests for changes of address on school records must be submitted to the Welcome Center for processing. Residential address changes cannot be processed by a child’s school office staff or by Petermann Transportation.

Any changes to a student’s home address must be requested on the district’s change of student information form. This form includes a standard authorization, to be signed by the parent, allowing for the release of residential and utility information to Pickerington Schools upon request, if necessary.

This release also includes an explanation, per Ohio Revised Code, as to how it is determined where your child is to receive his/her tuition-free, public school education. By signing this release, you are also verifying that you have been informed of your legal responsibility to withdraw a child from school if you ever move outside school district boundaries. It also informs you of your tuition obligations if you fail to withdraw.

If you do not have the capability to print the form, contact the Welcome Center at 614.920.6180. We will be happy to mail, email or fax the form to you for completion. You also may pick up or return the form directly to the Welcome Center, rather than turning it in at your school office for intra-office transfer to us. This expedites the address change process.

After a change of student information form is received at our Welcome Center, the request will be checked to verify that:

  • the request has been signed and dated by the parent of the student;
  • acceptable proof of the change in residence is attached to the request;
  • an open enrollment request has been completed, if applicable. This is necessary if a change of residence, made during the school year, causes a change in the student’s attendance area but the parent wishes to have the student finish the current school year at his/her current building. Such a request is only considered for the student’s continued attendance through the end of the current school year. Note that buses do not cross school boundary lines to accommodate open enrollment students. Parents are responsible for transportation.

If the move has caused a change in the building the student is to attend, the involved school buildings are notified and the electronic and physical transfer of records takes place. Arrangements for the official start date in the new school can be made between you and the office staff of your child’s new school.

Bus transportation after change of address

The Welcome Center will notify Petermann Transportation of your change of home address. If bus service is available in your new area for your child, we begin the steps needed to arrange a new bus stop location “from and to” your new residence. Petermann staff establish all bus stops and notify drivers as quickly as possible. Your school building office staff will obtain all bus stop information from Petermann Transportation.

If a new bus stop must be established at any point in the route where the driver does not currently make a stop, this process may take two to three days. If necessary, your child’s school office can issue a bus pass if your child must ride the bus before the change can be finalized by Petermann Transportation.

This change in address change procedure applies only to changes in the actual physical address where a parent and the student reside. A temporary change of bus stop location at a place other than the student’s home (for situations such as babysitting arrangements) may be accepted in the school office of the building where your child attends.

A form requesting a new bus stop location can be downloaded from Petermann Transportation. The Welcome Center does not handle these changes. The forms should be submitted to your child’s school office or faxed them directly to Petermann Transportation.

Visitors to the Building

Remember, all school visits begin by signing in at the office first. This safety measure alerts us as to who is in the building. Please remember that if you would like to observe your child in their classroom, we ask that you arrange this in advance with your child’s teacher. This will help ensure that there is not more than 1 parent in the classroom at a time and will avoid scheduling conflicts. We also ask that you help minimize classroom disruption by not interacting with students or the teacher at this time. Audio or videotaping is also not allowed. We have a copy of classroom visitation guidelines in the office.

"I Can" Statements

About "I Can"

Welcome to Toll Gate’s “I Can” Statements. “I Can” statements align with the Ohio Department of Education standards for reading/language arts and math. Teachers use them to give a clear focus and purpose to a lesson for students. “I Can” statements may be used for a period of days or even weeks as one lesson usually does not allow for mastery. The “I Can “ statements will be revisited throughout the year. Ask your children about the “I Can” statements and have them tell you what they can do!
