We Are Proud to Announce Our Diversity Champion Award

Pickerington Schools Receives Diversity Champion Award

Pickerington Schools is pleased to announce we have been honored with the Diversity Champion Award from the Pickerington Area Chamber of Commerce.

Pickerington, Ohio [June 5, 2023] Pickerington Schools is proud to announce we have been awarded the Pickerington Area Chamber Diversity Champion Award. This recognition goes to the Pickerington Area Chamber of Commerce member who has consistently demonstrated its commitment to creating an inclusive environment where every individual feels empowered. This recognition is a testament to our outstanding efforts in fostering diversity and inclusiveness within our community.

The Pickerington Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Dinner and Silent Auction took place May 18, 2023 at the Wigwam Event Center in Pickerington. During this event, our district was honored for its contributions to diversity and inclusiveness.

One of the reasons we stood out as a nominee is our exceptional Black History Month programs. Each of our high schools hosted engaging and educational activities, including Pickerington High School North's Black Excellence and Pickerington High School Central's Roots. Our districtwide awards celebration honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a huge success. These events are open to the public; they not only educate students and staff about the importance of diversity and the contributions of African Americans throughout history, but they also encourage meaningful conversations and understanding in our community.

Recognizing the importance of ongoing education and awareness, we have taken proactive steps to promote diversity within our staff. Our office of Diversity and Engagement, directed by Dr. Michael Jackson, specializes in diversity programming, ensuring that diversity and inclusion remain integral parts of our educational experience. Additionally, all employees participate in monthly professional development to improve their understanding and sensitivity towards students from different backgrounds. In addition to our work in the classroom, we have formed parent groups supporting those who are new to our nation in learning about American culture and navigating social services. These groups provide valuable resources and empower families to fully engage in our community, fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion.

"Winning this award was a welcomed surprise and affirmation that we are making strides in our efforts to be more equitable and inclusive in our approaches and educational practices. It also serves as a catalyst and springboard for the future work yet to come here in Pickerington Schools. I'm very excited about where we are headed." — Dr. Michael Jackson, Director of Diversity and Engagement

At Pickerington Schools, we firmly believe in the strength of diversity and are dedicated to creating an environment where every student, family and staff member feels valued. The recognition from the Pickerington Area Chamber is both inspiring and motivating. It encourages us to continue our work in promoting equity and inclusivity. We are grateful to the Pickerington community for celebrating our outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusiveness. Our efforts highlight the power of unity and the limitless possibilities that arise when diversity is embraced and celebrated.

We will continue to foster an environment where diversity is cherished and celebrated. Our dedication will shape Pickerington Schools' educational practices and ensure that every student, staff member, and family feels welcomed, respected, and empowered.
