Pickerington Board of Education Welcomes Dr. Charles Smialek as Next Superintendent of Pickerington Local Schools

Board with New Superintendent

February 24, 2025, Pickerington, OH - Tonight, the Pickerington Local Schools Board of Education officially approved the contract for the District’s next Superintendent. Dr. Charles Smialek will assume the role on August 1, 2025.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Smialek to Pickerington,” said Board of Education President Clay Lopez. “We believe he is ready to take on the challenges of PLSD, build bridges, and foster collaboration. We look forward to working with him as he transitions into this role and wish him the best.”

Dr. Smialek brings more than 25 years of experience in public education, including his current tenure as Superintendent of Parma City Schools. There, he has focused on improving student achievement, maintaining fiscal responsibility, and increasing transparency. His leadership has resulted in innovative programs such as expanded gifted education, alternative learning opportunities, and a comprehensive instructional framework that has strengthened professional practice. Under his leadership, Parma City Schools earned the 2024 Momentum Award, recognizing it as one of the fastest-improving districts in Ohio.

During his remarks, Dr. Smialek acknowledged two of his children, Maria and stepson Douglas, who were present in the audience. He is also the proud father of a blended family, including his daughter Melissa and nephews Lance and London, whom he serves as guardian.

Dr. Smialek also took a moment to recognize one of his mentors, current OSU professor and former Euclid City Schools Superintendent Dr. Keith Bell, who was in attendance. He credited Dr. Bell with shaping his leadership approach.

“My favorite lesson from Keith is, ‘Don’t explain your problems—solve your problems,’” Dr. Smialek said. “I look forward to working through processes here to do just that. Most importantly, I recognize that my greatest challenge as I come to Pickerington is building trust. I view trust as building upon four pillars; honesty, sincerity, reliability, and competence. If I can be all four of those to all of you—regardless of what your role in the District is —we will strengthen relationships, we will make this a healthy organization, and when we are a healthy organization, our potential is infinite. I am truly grateful for this opportunity and for the trust you’ve placed in me.”

Over the next several months, Dr. Smialek is eager to be visible in the District, meeting with staff, students, and families. He understands the importance of community involvement and is committed to engaging with everyone before officially stepping into the role this August.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Scott J. Hunt will continue to lead the District through the transition period, ensuring a smooth leadership handoff.
