Pickerington Local Schools Board of Education Selects Next District Superintendent

Dr. Charles Smialek Selected as Next Superintendent of Pickerington Local Schools
Board of Education to Vote on Contract February 24

 

Pickerington, OH – February 22, 2025 – The Pickerington Local School District’s Board of Education is pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Charles Smialek as the next Superintendent of Pickerington Local Schools, pending Board approval. If approved, Dr. Smialek will officially assume the role effective August 1, 2025.

Dr. Smialek brings more than 25 years of experience in public education, with a proven track record of district leadership, student achievement, and community engagement. He emerged as the top candidate based on his experience as a superintendent, his ability to foster strong communication with stakeholders, and his passion for serving students, staff, and families.

“After an extensive  search in collaboration with K-12 Consulting, we are excited to announce the selection of our next Superintendent,” said Board of Education President Clay Lopez. “Dr. Charles Smialek brings a remarkable wealth of experience, having served as Superintendent in two different districts. His deep knowledge of curriculum, high energy, and strong commitment to transparency and community engagement make him an exceptional fit for our District. We look forward to finalizing the contract and welcoming him officially at our next Board meeting.”

Dr. Smialek currently serves as Superintendent of Parma City Schools, where he has led since 2018. During his tenure, he has focused on improving student achievement, maintaining fiscal responsibility, and increasing transparency across the school community. His leadership has resulted in the implementation of innovative programs, including alternative learning opportunities for students, expanded gifted education, and the development of a comprehensive instructional framework that has driven improved professional practice. Under his leadership, Parma City Schools earned the 2024 Momentum Award, recognizing the District as one of the fastest-improving in Ohio.

Prior to his time in Parma, Dr. Smialek served as Superintendent of Euclid City Schools, where he led successful strategic planning and fiscal management efforts, securing community support for major building projects and academic initiatives. His career includes extensive experience in curriculum development, school operations, and stakeholder engagement, having also served as assistant superintendent, principal, and social studies teacher.

Dr. Smialek looks forward to engaging with the Pickerington community in the months leading up to his official start on August 1.

Public education is a lifelong commitment to serving all students and families, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help create great experiences for every student.”

Dr. Smialek holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership from Kent State University, as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching and a Bachelor of Arts in History. His dedication to academic excellence, student-centered leadership, and community collaboration has earned him state and district-level recognition, including the Ohio PTA Achievement Award and the Bright Star Award from the Parma Area Chamber of Commerce.

Beyond his professional work, Dr. Smialek is the proud father of a blended family, including his daughters Maria and Melissa, stepson Douglas, and nephews Lance and London, whom he serves as guardian. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with family, cheering on Ohio State, and finding waterfronts to watch sunsets.

During this transition period, Interim Superintendent Dr. Scott J. Hunt will continue to lead the district and ensure a smooth handoff of leadership.

The next business meeting of the Pickerington Local Schools Board of Education will take place on Monday, February 24, at 5:00 p.m. at the District Offices (90 North East Street).

The Board looks forward to officially welcoming Dr. Smialek as he prepares to begin his tenure as Superintendent of Pickerington Local Schools in early August.
