Student Spotlight: Brooke Harder Mace

Today we shine our Student Spotlight on Brooke Harder Mace! We caught up with Brooke at Pickerington Alternative School (PAS) where she is in the 11th grade.

Brooke transferred from Pickerington High School Central (PHSC) to PAS last year. She was gracious enough to speak to me about her experience at PAS. Her responses are lightly edited for length and clarity.

Why did you choose to attend PAS?

PAS is a better fit for me. I went to Central (PHSC), and it was so big with so many people. I found it hard to be there and get my school work done.

Was PAS what you expected?

No and yes. There's a lot more people here, and it's a lot less contained than I thought it would be. It's not separate from North (Pickerington High School North). It's in the same building.

The classes are what I expected. They are online using Apex. I like Apex. It's easy to get my work done, everything is laid out, and I know what to expect and what school work needs to be done.

What do you like about PAS?

It's easy to get around. All of the classes are in the same hall. I like that I only have to take the classes I need to graduate.

My favorite teacher is Ms. Sawyer. She is my history teacher. But all of my teachers are really supportive. They really listen to me and help me with my work when I need it.

What is your favorite class?

Math. I like math because it's not too hard and not too easy. Just challenging enough.

What is your least favorite class?

What do you plan to do after you graduate from high school?

I will probably graduate early but still walk with my class in May 2024. I think I will take a year or two off from school and then go to college for criminal justice.

Tell me something about yourself.

I love art! I love painting, drawing, and crafting. I paint using acrylic paints, and I mostly do my drawing in pencil.

A selection of Brooke's artwork is available to view at the end of this article.

PAS is part of the Pickerington Schools district. The school's mission is to provide a personalized, supportive learning environment for students who need alternative approaches to education. The curriculum at PAS is designed to be flexible and adaptable to meet the individual needs of each student. Small class sizes and individual instruction help PAS students to find success and reach their full potential.
