About Pickerington Preschool

The Pickerington Preschool is a program that enhances and encourages learning for children with disabilities and typically developing children (peer models). We welcome children ages 3-5 years of age, while offering a range of services free to children with a qualifying disability. We believe that typical peers serve as models for appropriate behavior, social skills, and  language/ communication skills. Therefore, we include a limited number of “Peer Models” into each of our classrooms.  Typically developing children (peer models) are enrolled on a tuition basis, must be toilet trained, and residents of the Pickerington Local School District.  All children are provided with a typical preschool experience and the opportunity to interact with children of all abilities. See information on “Identifying Peer Models and Special Needs Students” below.

The program is operated according to the Ohio Department of Education standards, federal mandates for the Education of Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act, and state licensure rules and regulations. Preschool teachers must hold a license for the Early Education of the Handicapped issued by the Ohio Department of Education.

The philosophy of the program emphasizes developmentally-appropriate activities.  The preschool has adopted the Creative Curriculum. Within this context, children with  disabilities receive play-based, individualized, developmentally-appropriate  interventions, including child- and teacher-directed activities.

All program services are operated according to the Ohio Department of Education Rules for the Education of preschool children with disabilities and state licensure rule.

Info about Early Learning Development Standards

On October 9, 2012, the State Board of Education adopted Ohio’s Entry Early Learning and Development Standards in all domains of school readiness to reflect the comprehensive development of children beginning at birth to kindergarten entry.  The development of these standards represented a collaboration between state agencies serving young children.  The state agencies worked with national experts and writing teams made up of Ohio-based content experts and stakeholders to revise and expand the standards.
