On Saturday, Pickerington High School Central’s Tiger Tech team made history by becoming the first all-student team to win their local soapbox derby race and advance to the world competition.

These students will advance to the world championships at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio, between July 16-22. The championship race is July 22.

“Usually, kids just drive the car and an adult builds and tunes it,” said advisor and teacher Levon Thomas. “The race team made up of senior Nick Johnson (car builder/tuner) and junior Taylor G. Thompson (driver) won the Columbus Local Soapbox Championship.

This is the second year in a row PHSC will be racing on the world stage!

Tiger Tech had an over all great day, with all seven of its teams making it out of the first round. The teams brought home first-, fourth-, and fifth-place finishes in the Super Stock Division and third- and fourth-place finishes in the Masters Division.

Congratulations to all these students. You make Pickerington proud!
