Pickerington High School North graduate Sara Kuberski has received a university-financed National Merit Scholarship from the West Virginia University Foundation Inc.

The announcement was made today by National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Nearly 3,200 students nationwide were offered one of these college- and university-sponsored scholarships. The NMSC scholarships range from $500 to $2,000 per year.

Kuberski plans to attend West Virginia University this fall, majoring in forensics.

National Merit recipients are selected from students who advanced to the finalist level in the National Merit Scholarship competition and who met criteria of their scholarship sponsors.

More than 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program when they took the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. In September 2016, 16,000 semifinalists were announced. Those students represented the top one percent of the nation’s seniors.

To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, semifinalists had to fulfill requirements to advance to finalist standing. This included a detailed application, which included writing an essay and providing information about extracurricular activities, awards, and leadership positions. Semifinalists also have to have an outstanding academic record, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, and earn SAT scores that confirmed their qualifying test performance.

Congratulations, Sara! You make Pickerington proud!
