Junior High, Middle School Families Invited to College and Career Family Night

It’s never too early to start thinking about your child’s college and career, and an event planned for Jan. 24 will start the planning process for Pickerington junior high and middle school students and their parents.

College and Career Family Night on Wednesday, January 24, at Ridgeview STEM Junior High is for students and their families from all of our junior high schools and middle schools. The free event will begin with pizza and a showcase featuring Eastland-Fairfield Career Center and Pickerington STEM programs at 5 p.m. Presentations will run from 6 to 8 p.m.

Parents can register online to attend.

“The sessions at College and Career Family Night are designed to help build the foundation for families to start seriously thinking about their children’s college and careers,” said Kris Owen, school counselor at Ridgeview.

Ridgeview school counselor Eileen McGarvey said the sessions would cover a variety of relevant topics, including

  • Digital citizenship and safety
  • Battelle Maker Minded Program
  • Service learning
  • Construction Technologies
  • Parent’s guide to career exploration
  • Financial planning
  • College Credit Plus/flex credit
  • Developing a six-year graduation plan
  • Pickerington Schools college & career preparation/planning
  • STEM activities
  • Using the Naviance planning tool
  • Preparing for college entrance exams
  • College lift-off
  • High school and junior high student panels
  • Success skills for college and career
  • College selection process
  • Project Lead the Way
  • How to Make the Most of Your High School Experience

Plus, hear keynote speaker Kim Ebbrecht, senior director of “I Know I Can,” with her presentation, “College Planning Starts NOW! Learn the best practices for creating a college-going culture at home.”
