Free Training for Charitable Organizations: Tips and Tools to Avoid Trouble and Make a Difference

The following event is open to officers and members of parent/booster organizations serving any Pickerington Schools school, sport, or activity.  Officers and members of local community charitable support organizations, such as PYAA, etc., are also welcome to attend.

 

On Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. Pickerington Schools will be partnering with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office to offer the following training for parent/booster organizations:

Charitable Leadership: Tips and Tools to Avoid Trouble and Make a Difference

Now more than ever, charities play a critical role in the lives of our community members. Leaders of charities commonly share a real passion for the cause. But being a cheerleader isn’t enough. Board members have key legal obligations that serve to protect the charity and its work. This workshop will examine those responsibilities and provide easy-to-follow recommendations in multiple areas, including board governance responsibilities, fundraising matters, required governmental filings and financial checks and balances. The work is important and it only takes marginally more work to do things properly.

Beth Short, who handles outreach and education for the Ohio Attorney General’s Charitable Law Section, has spent her career working for and with nonprofit organizations. Her passion for the nonprofit sector is evidenced by her professional and volunteer background working with charities as a staff member, board member, consultant and volunteer for large and small organizations. She brings a background in journalism, legislative and public affairs and training, complemented by a master’s in business that focused on nonprofit management issues. Her work in the Charitable Law Section focuses on the development of strategies aimed at strengthening the nonprofit sector. She is a graduate of the Ohio State University and Ohio University.

To remain in good standing with Pickerington Schools, parent/booster organizations must adhere to the identified best practices listed in Pickerington Schools Board Policy 9211. Each year Pickerington Schools asks all our parent/booster organization group officers to confirm that these best practices have been adopted and followed.  In this way, parent/booster organizations can ensure accountability, promote transparency, and instill confidence in our parents and community that these organizations are effectively managing parent and community resources.

The applicable section of Pickerington Schools Board Policy 9211 is as follows: 

“Annually require its officers to complete between 3-6 hours of Charitable Law training, offered by the Ohio Attorney General, covering the following topics:

  • Minding the Business While Changing the World: Legal Obligations of Charity (Leaders 1-3 hours)
  • Charitable Fundraising: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1 hour)
  • Charitable Registration: A Tool for Transparency (1 hour)”

For Pickerington Schools school-sponsored parent/booster organization officers, attending Charitable Leadership: Tips and Tools to Avoid Trouble and Make a Difference will complete a requirement of Pickerington Schools Board Policy 9211.

Training will be held from 5:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at the Pickerington Schools District Office, 90 N. East Street in Pickerington. It is free of charge to anyone who can attend.  Register here for Charitable Leadership: Tips and Tools to Avoid Trouble and Make a Difference.
