Drivers Urged To Be Cautious As Kids Return To School

Dear Parents and Friends of the Schools,

Each year, Pickerington Schools experience incidents involving vehicles traveling at excessive speeds near our schools and drivers who are not watching for children walking and biking near school.

Pickerington Schools reminds parents and other drivers within our community to be cautious and attentive around school zones because children are present.

So, as you are traveling around Pickerington, please remember:

The speed limit in school zones is 20 miles per hour when children are present.

Our schools have developed drop-off and pick-up locations and processes. Take the time to learn the appropriate processes for your child’s school.

Children are not always attentive to their surroundings. They sometimes walk and ride bikes in ways that could cause accidents. Drivers should keep a watchful eye open for children, especially between 7 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. and from 1:45 to 4 p.m.

Remember that school buses make frequent stops when transporting children to and from school. Don’t be a distracted driver! That Facebook post will wait until you get home.

Remember that it is illegal to go around a school bus when it is picking up and dropping off students. Stop for a school bus with its red overhead lights flashing, regardless of the direction you are driving. Do not start driving again until the bus starts moving and red lights stop flashing, or until signaled by the bus driver to proceed.

If you are dropping off or picking up your kids, don’t double park or stop on crosswalks. Avoid loading or unloading children at locations across the street from the school. Don’t block visibility for other children or motorists. Check your surroundings carefully before letting your children exit the vehicle.

Thank you for helping make Pickerington Schools a safe place for our children!
