Letter from the Principal

Dear Parents and Students,

I would like to welcome all of you to Lakeview Junior High for the 2019/2020 school year! As I am sure you have noticed, school supplies are filling the shelves of stores, which means the start of school is right around the corner.

I am always excited about the start of a new school year.  I look forward to seeing the students that are returning for another year and eagerly anticipate the new students coming to Lakeview for the first time.  This time is full of many different emotions for students.  It is also sometimes difficult for junior high students to balance and prioritize their academics, the influence of friends, sports involvement, and other factors that can have large impacts. Our staff realizes these many factors and will work to support the unique needs of our students both academically and socially.

Providing a quality education to our students is my top priority. There is nothing more important than educating students to provide them with the greatest access to their dreams.

The junior high level is a time of exploration and self-discovery. Our students have the opportunity to take two periods of electives each day, and we offer a great variety of options for our students. I encourage students to explore different options during their time at the junior high, as it might open a door or pique an interest in something new before making course selections at the high school.

Communication is at the root of most problems or issues that arise in nearly any situation. It is my goal to make sure that we communicate in a way that is efficient and effective this school year, and I hope that I can count on you to communicate with us if you have questions or concerns.

Each Tuesday, via email, I send a newsletter with important upcoming events, news and information. It is critical that your email address is accurate in Infinite Campus, as email is the most popular and efficient means of communication from the teachers and myself.

Welcome Days Description

Welcome Days is a privilege and with that privilege comes the responsibility to complete your Emergency Medical Forms, any shot records, and pay past due fees. By turning in the shot records & emergency medical forms (completing the Online Forms) and paying any past due fees, your student will have the privilege to be able to obtain their 2019/2020 class schedule early (at Welcome Days.) On the first day of school, August 15, 2019, all class schedules will be available for all students.

Before Welcome Days: Please get online to our PLSD website to complete the Pickerington Schools online forms at Pickerington Schools OneView Forms website. You will need to access OneView through the Infinite Campus Parent website/app.  If you did this last year, you may sign in using the same user name and password that you created last year. If you do not recall what you used, please visit the OneView Frequent Questions page to see how to request your OneView username/password. Once you are able to sign in, you will notice that your form already has information listed – this is what you entered last year. Review every single detail, phone numbers, emails, etc., etc., etc., and update anything that needs updated, sign and date it then submit when complete. If this is new for you, create an account and follow the directions.

Welcome Days Description Details:  Enter through athletic entrance doors behind the flagpoles at Door C.

You will be greeted by Lakeview’s PTO parents informing you of various Lakeview opportunities, you can make your $25.00 PTO donation (in lieu of a fundraiser,) and they will direct you to the next station.

The Clinic: Turn in T-dap and any other shot records to the clinic. You will have already completed the Emergency Medical form at Online Forms.  (both of these are required).

**The required Emergency Medical Form must be complete online and contain at least two phone numbers in order to receive your student’s schedule early at Welcome Days.

**The T-dap shot records for 7th grade and new students to Pickerington Schools must be complete and approved by our school nurse in order to receive your student’s schedule early at Welcome Days.

Receive your nurse’s clearance to proceed. Move to the cafeteria.

Add money to your student’s lunch account (optional.)

Guidance Counselors: Check for past due fees or pick up Class Schedule. Should you owe past due fees, once past due fees are paid either in the main office or through your parent portal in room 302, we will give you a receipt to go back to the cafeteria to pick up your schedule. If no past due fees are owed, you will collect your schedule and proceed to Chromebook pick up in the Media Center.

There will not be any schedule changes done during Welcome Days. You may go to room 302 to complete a google form requesting a meeting with your counselor.

You will be directed to the location for Chromebook pick up in the Media Center and then to room 302 (beside the media center) for Infinite Campus Parent Portal (to update contact information and/or pay fees,) to sign up to meet with your counselor, to sign up to volunteer, to sign up for Teen Nights, and to report locker problems.

Tour the building and walk your schedule! Don’t forget to stop by the office and say hello!

All schedules will be available for pick up on the first day of school. If you have requested a schedule change, follow your original schedule until your counselor gets you the new updated schedule.

2019 – 2020 Fall Participation Fees: Financially Disadvantaged Guidelines

  1. All students participating in extracurricular activities will be responsible for paying some portion of the assigned fee per activity.
  2. Families may apply for a reduced extracurricular participation fee by downloading and submitting the application on the District website under the “Athletic Forms” section of the “District Forms” tab. Forms are due on or before Friday, August 2, 2019. You must provide copies of all required documents. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  3. This application is separate from the National School Lunch Program form for free and reduced lunch and must be filled out and turned into the Director of Student Activities in order to qualify for a reduced participation fee.
  4. The Fall application is due by August 2, 2019. You must submit a minimum of half payment for your athlete (or athletes) by the due date. Submitting an application does not waive your fee (or fees) obligation for participation.
  5. The Director of Student Activities will review the application. If approved, you will receive an email or letter indicating reduced fee amount and payment dates.
  6. To view the Financially Disadvantaged Payment Chart, refer to Board policy AG 2432.04 on the District website under the “District Policies” tab.

You have three payment options available to you to pay your student’s fees:

  1.  Pay online through Infinite Campus.
  2. Mail your payment to: Pickerington Local Schools, Treasurer’s Office, 90 N. East Street, Pickerington, Ohio 43147.  All checks or money orders should be made payable to “Pickerington Local Schools” or “PLSD” and reference your student’s name and student ID number. Cash payments cannot be accepted by mail.
  3. Pay in person at your student’s building or the Treasurer’s Office.

This fall, after most schedule changes and fee reductions has been determined, the treasurer’s office will post this year’s school fees. Please check your Infinite Campus Parent Portal throughout the school year for fee updates. For example, schedule changes could add a fee to a schedule that was updated in February.

Shot Requirements for 7th Graders 2019/2020 School Year

The Ohio Department of Health has added an additional immunization requirement for students entering 7th grade.  Currently, your child is required to get a Tdap shot (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) to begin their 7th-grade year.  Now, in addition, all incoming 7th graders will need a Meningococcal vaccine (Meningitis).  Meningitis is a vaccine-preventable disease that is on the rise in teens and college dormitories.  Your child may have already received these shots.  Check with your healthcare provider for current vaccine records.  Documentation of receiving these shots will be required to begin school and avoid exclusion.  Please turn in all documentation to the school.  We recommend scheduling early to avoid the rush.  Thank you for your cooperation.  To have your child vaccinated, call and schedule an appointment with your primary care physician or your local Health Department.

Lockers

Locker Directions

Step-by-step directions for locker access:

Your locker number is located at the top of your schedule.

Your locker combination is located beside your locker number on your schedule.

Your locker will be near one or more of your teachers’ rooms that are on your team.

To work a combination lock, make sure that you stop exactly on each number.

Memorize your combination. If you forget your combination, you could end up being late for class. If you have a cell phone, take a picture of your schedule/combination.

Opening Instructions:

1. Spin the dial on your lock to the left 3 times to clear it out.

2. Turn the dial on your lock to the right, passing the first number of your combination two times. On the third time around, stop exactly on the first number in your combination.

3. Turn the lock to the left until you pass the second number in the combination one time, then stop on the second number in the combination the second time around.

4. Rotate the dial on your lock to the right and go directly to the third number in the combination – do not pass it.

5. Push up firmly on the black knob under the lock. Then, while holding the black knob up, open the door towards you. Voila!!

If your locker doesn’t open the first time, try again. It is possible that you may have accidentally stopped on the wrong number. If it doesn’t open after several attempts, ask for assistance. Our custodians are very helpful with lockers.

During Welcome Days, we will have our WEB Leaders available to help with lockers. We will also have locker maps hung on the trophy cases by the teacher’s workroom on each academic floor.

For middle school, junior high, and high school, the school lunches will be $2.75. Premium meals will be $3.50.

Study Tables

Study Tables Description

Study Tables were designed to provide a safe and quiet environment where students can relax, have a snack, and do homework while waiting for their coach or activity advisor to begin their practice/meeting. Since our teacher workday ends at 3:00 p.m., we provide Study Tables coverage until 3:10 p.m.

Please remind your student that athletes are held to a higher standard (it’s in the athletic handbook) and coaches expect them to utilize Study Tables to the best of their ability, to treat all staff respectfully, and to be prepared to be focused and ready-to-go for practices and games at 3:10 p.m.

Lakeview does not give permission for any student to leave Study Tables early, unsupervised. We do want parents to know that some students are leaving school and heading to Wendy’s and Kroger’s during this time. If a student does not stay for Study Tables, they are not permitted back in the building until their coach is here to let them back in the athletic doors C.

We cannot have students coming and going as they please. Should your student have an appointment after school, you will need to make arrangements ahead of time with the coach about your plan to connect your athlete with his/her team/coach.
