Matt Young

One day after giving a basketball clinic to little kids while I was in college, a teacher came up to me and said, ”You should work with kids. You are great with them.” I said, “Nah, my mom did that and it looks like a lot of work.” Later, that same year my Art professors approached me and said, “You have finished all your studio requirements, you work well with others, you should consider getting your education degree as well.” I said, “Sheesh! What is this? Ok, I’ll give it a shot.” My senior year as I was doing my elementary student teaching I was called into the principals office. Thinking I was in trouble for making a kid cry after asking her to clean up (I’m not good with the little ones), I was pleasantly surprised to find a parent in the office praising me for the time I took to help her son.
20 years later I am glad that others saw in me what I did not see in myself. I enjoy waking up everyday to hopefully inspire the next Dali, show a student that they can accomplish what they set out to do, or maybe just give a kid a creative break in the day. I look forward to all the challenges that each individual student brings my way. It allows for the days and the years to all be different in their own unique way. Even though my lessons may be the same sometimes, the creative ways in which the students approach them keeps me on my toes.
