Before & After School Group Opportunities

Student Council

Student Council – Student Council is a service leadership group for both 5th and 6th grade students. One student is chosen from each home room to serve as student council representative for the year. This group meets twice a month afterschool to discuss and plan various service projects throughout the year as well as learn about different characteristics leadership and success. Students must apply for the opportunity to participate in this group.

Ladies First

Ladies First is a group that gives the young ladies of Diley an opportunity to meet with myself and, more importantly, other women from our building and the community. This year, our ladies will meet to discuss the 7 habits of highly effective teens. This group promotes the discussion and practice of etiquette and good character. The group meets twice a month before school. The first meeting of the month will be held in the Library. For this meeting, students are asked to dress up. The second meeting consists of playing a game or doing some other physical activity in the gym, as well as a recap of the topics discussed at the beginning of the month. Students are encouraged to attend both meetings to emphasize the importance of values and skills being learned in the first meeting, as well as to reap the benefit of physical activity and camaraderie amongst peers in the second meeting.

Young Gents

Before School

Young Gents is a group that gives the young men of Diley an opportunity to meet with myself and other men from our building and the community. New Students/Building Friendships (September) – This group will discuss the following topics: what’s unique about Diley Middle School/PLSD, explore different ways to get involved at DMS, conversation starters, and different aspects of being a good friend.

5th Grade – 9/1, 9/8, 9/15, 9/22

6th Grade – 9/3, 9/10, 9/17, 9/24

 

Academic Success (October) – This group will discuss the following topics: Organization, time management, test taking strategies, and study habits.

5th Grade – 10/6, 10/13, 10/20, 10/27

6th Grade – 10/8, 10/15, 10/22, 10/29

 

Empower – self esteem (November/December) – This group will discuss the following topics: strengths & weaknesses, the power of positive thinking, and how to put yourself in a position to be successful.

5th Grade – 11/10, 11/17, 12/1, 12/8

6th Grade – 11/12, 11/19, 12/3, 12/10

 

Families in Transition (January) – This group will discuss the following topics: how to manage differences between households, not playing the middle man, understanding that you are not to blame, and not being defined by circumstance

6th Grade – 1/7, 1/14, 1/21, 28

 

Stand up Against Bullying (February) – This group will discuss the following topics: T different types of bullying, how not to be a bystander, and how to handle different bulling situations.

Career Exploration (March) – This group will discuss the following topics: strengths and interests, personality type, exploring different career clusters based on your personality type and interests.

Transitions – {6th grade only} (April) – This group will discuss the following topics: navigating the Jr. High, organization and study skills, and student schedules.
