PLSD Addresses Claims from PEA Regarding Board of Education Relations and District Initiatives
Pickerington, OH – April 22, 2024 – In response to recent claims made by the PEA President, Brad Harris, during the last board meeting, the Pickerington Local School District (PLSD) clarifies its position and ongoing efforts to collaborate with all stakeholders for the betterment of the district.
At the last board meeting, Mr. Harris presented the Board of Education with a vote of "No Confidence" from the PEA, alleging a refusal by the Board to engage in discussions with PEA representatives. PLSD asserts that throughout the Summer of 2023, negotiations were conducted in good faith, resulting in a new collective bargaining agreement endorsed by both parties. This agreement addressed various concerns, including class size, support for special education teachers, and adjustments to the workday, demonstrating a commitment to collaborative decision-making.
Contrary to claims of refusal, PLSD emphasizes its history of open dialogue and collaboration with PEA, evidenced by the negotiation of class size numbers and the provision of structured planning time exceeding state requirements. Furthermore, PLSD highlights initiatives such as the establishment of a joint committee for administrators and teachers to address the needs of children with disabilities, additional support for Special Education teachers, and increased FTEs for Related Arts to ensure full planning time for elementary teachers.
Regarding financial stability, PLSD rejects assertions of fiscal irresponsibility, citing its consistent achievement of high academic standards while maintaining efficiency and effectiveness in operations. The district's recent 4.5-star rating on the State Report Card underscores its commitment to excellence and accountability.
Looking ahead, PLSD announces plans to initiate a formal stakeholder engagement process to address potential changes to school start and end times. This inclusive approach reflects the district's dedication to involving all internal and external stakeholders in decision-making processes.
