The Pickerington Local School District Board of Education will take action at a special board meeting on May 30 at 6:00pm to employ Chris Briggs, Ed.D. as superintendent of schools, effective August 1, 2017. Dr. Briggs, who was awarded a five-year contract, is currently the superintendent of the Northridge Local Schools in Licking County. He will replace current superintendent, Dr. Valerie Browning-Thompson who is retiring on June 30 and has served the school district since 2014.

The Board of Education has been conducting a superintendent search since early April. The Board received the assistance in the process from K-12 Business Consulting. After developing a superintendent profile that was based on information provided by parents, teachers, administrators and support staff, the Board reviewed the credentials of 12 applicants, many of whom were recruited.

Board of Education interviews with six semi-final candidates were conducted on May 16 and May 17 after a committee of 13 citizens and district employees first screened each candidate during Meet and Greet sessions. Three finalists returned on May 23 for a second interview with the Board.

Board President, Vanessa Niekamp says, “The Board looks forward to Dr. Briggs joining the Pickerington team as we continue our quest to provide high quality education to all students in a caring and safe environment. On behalf of the Board, I wish to thank the community members, staff and consultants who assisted in this important process. We are excited to have the opportunity to work with Dr. Briggs, and believe he will have a positive impact in our community.”

Dr. Briggs began his educational career in 1991 as intervention specialist in South-Western City Schools and was promoted to assistant principal and athletic director during his tenure there. He left South-Western City Schools in 2001 to become the high school principal of Hamilton Local Schools where he served for 2 years. In 2003 he accepted the intermediate school principal position at New Albany Local Schools and was principal there for 8 years. He was offered a position as Regional Executive Director for Columbus Public Schools for three years before accepting the position as the superintendent of the Northridge Local School District in 2013.

Chris received his bachelor’s degree in elementary education and special education from Muskingum College in 1991, and his master’s degree in educational administration from The Ohio State University in 1995. He received his educational doctorate from Nova Southeastern University in 2006. He is a member of many professional and civic organizations and serves on the State of Ohio Superintendent Advisory Committee comprised of selected superintendents from around the state.

Dr. Briggs is excited to be a part of the PLSD and noted that, “Pickerington Local Schools has a proud tradition of excellence in education. I am very honored for the opportunity to serve the community as superintendent. I look forward to bringing the skill sets I’ve developed over the years, and I’m really excited to work with the amazing team of Pickerington educators, students, families and residents.”
